The Military Council head Senior General Min Aung Hlaing's emergency ruling authority has been extended for another 6 months, citing that the situation in Myanmar is not normal.

According to Article 425 of the Constitution, it is clearly stated that 'normally, the President of the country has the right to entrust the power of the country to the commander-in-chief only for 2 years'. However, the National Defense and Security Council (NDSC) meeting held on January 31st decided that the current situation is 'not normal' and that the three branches of constitutional power will be extended to the head of the Military Council for another 6 months.

The 2008 Constitution states that if the commander-in-chief has not been able to complete the duties assigned to him within the specified term and presents a strong and sufficient reason for extending the term, the NDSC has the right to consider and decide to extend the term twice, each lasting 6 months.

The NDSC meeting held at the office of the head of the Military Council discussed and decided that the current situation in the country is not normal, and condemned the National Union Government (NUG), the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the People's Defense Forces (PDF) as organizations that are trying to seize power through violence, according to the Military Council’s statement.
