Female Yangon student sentenced to 10 years in prison under anti-terrorism law

Ma Nang Twal Tar Oo, a final-year student at Yangon University of Education, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Mawlamyine District Court, Mon State on 29 December.

She was a joint secretary of the University of Education Student Union and was sentenced to 10 years in prison under Section 50 (j) of anti- terrorism law by Mawlamyine District Court under the Military Council, according to the information officer of All Burma Federation of Students Unions.

She is said to have actively participated in anti-regime activities in Mawlamyine Town and was arrested by Military Council forces on 9 June 2022.

The junta accused her of financing local resistance forces and Mawlamyine District Court sentenced her to 10 years in prison under Section 50 (j) of the Anti-Terrorism Law.

"When it comes to a student being sentenced to a long prison term, the loss of each student member fighting against the military dictatorship is huge. However, the fighting spirit of each student will become a source of strength for the rest of the students," said the information officer of the All Burma Federation of Students Union.

If convicted, Section 50 (j) of the Anti-Terrorism Law can result in a minimum of 10 years to life in prison.

Former Yangon University of Education Students' Union chairman Ko Soe Thura Kyaw (aka) poet Thar Shar, Ko Naung Htet Aung, and vice-chairman Ko Zaw Zaw Htet Naing (aka) poet Sit Naing have all been arrested and sentenced to long prison terms by the Military Council after the 2021 coup.
