Dr. Aye Zan, the Chief Minister of Mon State, appealed the military council’s claims of electoral abuse to the State Court of Justice, but his request was rejected, the sources familiar with the case told Than Lwin Times.
The coup council filed two cases against Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan under Article 171(f) of the Penal Code for allegedly abusing power in the 2020 general election.
The lawyer team of Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan sought to dismiss the entire case, but on November 15, the Mon State Court of Justice ruled that it should be turned down.
Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan’s lawyer team requested to dismiss the entire case, pointing out that it is necessary to have a presidential authorization in the prosecution of crimes committed while serving as a public servant.
However, as the State Court of Justice, which is controlled by the military council, rejected the appeal, Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan’s case will continue to be examined in the upcoming trials.
Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan’s case was filed by U Htin Kyaw, the secretary of the Sub-Election Commission of Mawlamyine District.
The military council sentenced the 68-year-old Chief Minister, Dr. Aye Zan, to 25 years in prison for 11 charges, and he was held at the Kyaikmaraw Central Prison.
