Bomb detonated outside Yangon’s Hlaing Township electricity office

Junta soldiers guarding the Electric Power Corporation (EPC) office on the Yangon to Insein Road, in Yangon’s Hlaing Township were attacked at 4:30 p.m. on 27 September.

According to witnesses a bomb was detonated in front of the EPC office, which is located in front of the Butaryone bus stop on the Yangon to Insein Road, before shots were fired at the junta soldiers guarding the office.

“I was in a car. We heard the sound of the explosion first, then we heard gunshots as well. Next, I noticed smoke coming from the EPC office. The road was blocked off after the incident and it hasn’t yet reopened. The Military Council soldiers seemed to suffer casualties”, said a person with knowledge of the situation. After the incident junta soldiers in three military vehicles and two ambulances attended the scene, according to witnesses who also said that some of the junta troops guarding the EPC office might have been injured or possibly killed.

Currently, no anti-junta groups have claimed responsibility for the attack. Bombs were previously detonated in front of the same EPC office in July and earlier in September. Following these last explosions, the authorities have taken the Butaryone bus stop out of service.
