Regime forces extort money from cyclists, bikers in Tanintharyi

The military personnel and the police have been arresting and extorting money from people traveling by cars, motorcycles, and bicycles for various reasons since last month, residents and firsthand accounts told Than Lwin Times.

They also confiscated the motorcycles parked in front of the San Thit Bakery, and then the owners had to pay within two days to get their vehicles back, " said a source.

Tanintharyi Region Management Council instructed that every township in Taninthari Region must develop a fund plan of two hundred lakhs per month, according to residents.

However, Than Lwin Times cannot independently confirm the locals' statements.

Locals also said that the owners of the arrested vehicles have to pay a fine of 500,000 to 1,000,000 kyats, while the motorcycle owners have to pay a fine of 100,000 to 200,000 kyats depending on the type.

On the other hand, the regime troops are asking for money by allowing illegal gambling in various townships to meet the 200-lakh plan.

As the junta soldiers, police, and some administrative officials have allowed gambling clubs, thefts and robberies have also occurred frequently, causing concern among local residents.

According to FE5 Tanintharyi, an average of 20 activists and civilians are arrested per month in the Tanintharyi region.
