The Karenni State Consultative Council (KSCC) has called on all armed groups resisting the military regime to ensure the security of health workers in Karenni State following an incident when someone was stopped and investigated despite providing medical care under KSCC.

“The health worker was detained while on the road. In the future, we want to request armed organization to not do something like this again,” said Dr Ye Zaw, a member of a health committee working with KSCC.

Fortunately, the situation was resolved through negotiation between relevant parties, he said.

In a 28 June statement, KSCC asked armed organisation to inform them before interrogating doctors, nurses or any other health workers.

Bo Bo, the spokesperson for Karenni State Police, said that someone’s human rights cannot be violated even though we’re fighting a revolution.

“Sometimes we need to launch an investigation…However, we need to make sure that we don’t do anything wrong…We should not use rude words during an investigation.”

Many medical staff who joined the civil disobedience movement following the coup are providing essential health services to civilians in Karenni State.

Regime offensives and fighting with resistance groups have displaced over 200,000 in Burma’s smallest state.
