Gunmen Murder MUP Candidate in Karen State

A female politician who contested the 2020 race under the Mon Unity Party (MUP) was shot dead on Tuesday, June 8, in Karen State.

Several unidentified gunmen murdered Mi Wai Thi Phyo at close range after she left Ywar Thit village.

“She was assassinated on the way to Payathonzu town (aka Three Pagodas Pass) when returning from her garden. We don't know who is behind this... Our party will release a statement about it,” an MUP central committee member told NMG.

Mi Wai Thi Phyo passed away in the hospital at around 7 pm the same day as her execution. Bullets entered the left side of her chest, left arm and right leg.

Mi Wai Thi Phyo, 32, was a lawyer and contested Burma's Amyotha Hluttaw (House of Nationalities) in Kyar Inn Seik Gyi Township, Karen State.

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a village headman appointed by the military council for Payathonzu town, along the Thai border, on May 19.

On May 27, two gunmen killed Myint Swe, chair of Union Solidarity and Development Party for Bee Lin Township, in Mon State.
