The Kyauktada Township trial court sentenced Naw Ohn Hla and two Karen youths who were detained in connection with holding Karen Martyr’s Day in downtown Yangon to 15-day imprisonment but they were released immediately as their judicial custody is more than the sentence.

After which Naw Ohn Hla, the two Karen youths and over 300 people who came to rally around them marched in procession from Kyauktada Township court to Mahabandoola square and demanded equal ethnic rights.

Those who came to the court included Karen National Union (KNU) central executive committee member Pado Mahn Nyein Maung.

Pado Mahn Nyein Maung told media, “Ethnic people have a right to self-determination. They have their own rights to determine their rights. This country is not inhabited only by ethnic Karen people but also by many ethnic peoples. So, we need to know the unique and significant cultural heritage of each ethnic and their self-determination rights. Only after that, ethnic unity can be really implemented.”
