Two local residents released after lengthy court hearing

After a court hearing lasting for four months, two out of four detained people from Buthidaung Township were released on May 28, according to their lawyer U Than Khaing.

U Maung Tun Hlaing, Thayetpyin village administrator in Buthidaung Township, U Aung Tun Sein, U Maung Kyaw Win and U Aung Htay were detained and the court deliberated over whether they should be indicted on May 28.

The court found that U Maung Tun Hlaing and U Aung Tun Sein were cleared of all charges and they were let go.

“Four people filed complaints under section 17 (1) and (2) of Unlawful Association Act. The court decided if they should be indicted. Two of them were released after charges against them were dropped,” lawyer U Than Khaing said.

The four people were detained for allegedly having ties to the Arakan Army (AA) and the court has charged U Aung Htay and U Maung Kyaw Win under section 17(1) of the Unlawful Association Act.
