Two villagers injured by artillery fire in Kyauktaw Township

Two civilians from a village in Kyauktaw Township have received serious injuries due to the explosion of an artillery shell that slammed into their house on the afternoon of April 1, according to aid volunteers.

An artillery shell hit a house in Phet Win Chaung village at about 3 p.m and a teenager and a man received wounds, Ko Zaw Win, who is providing help for the two patients, told the DMG.

Maung Thu, 15, and Zaw Min, 35, were taken to the Kyauktaw hospital, and a philanthropic group, named Kyauktaw Phyuzin Metta, is helping them.

“Maung Thu’s right arm was so badly injured that it might have to be amputated. The other person’s wound is also serious, his right heel has been severely cut,” Ko Zaw Win said.

“While they were home talking, an artillery shell landed on the house. It’s not clear who’s firing the heavy weapons,” Ko Zaw Win said.

Artillery shells launched by the No. 539 Battalion often exploded near the village, residents said.

The DMG could not yet confirm which group was responsible for this recent act of mortar fire.
