The delegations discussed the necessary requirements for the KNPP to consider signing the NCA.

Representatives of the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) and the Burmese government’s Peace Commission met informally in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Sunday Morning.

According to a KNPP official who spoke to NMG, the organization discussed the maintenance of a state- and Union-level ceasefire agreement, problems on the ground in Karenni areas, and necessary requirements for the organization to consider signing the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) with the government and military.

Peace Commission delegates reportedly focused on the future possibility of the KNPP signing of the NCA, as well as addressing trust issues.

The government delegation was led by Lt-Gen Khin Zaw Oo and included members U Aung Soe, U Zaw Htay, U Hla Maung Shwe and U Kyaw Lin Oo.

The KNPP’s team was headed by vice chairperson Khu Oo Reh, and included figures from the organization’s leadership, like Col Bone Naing, Khu Taw Reh, Khu The Buu, and technical support team member Neh Nei Plo and office staff member Khun Nawng.

The KNPP signed a ceasefire agreement with the former military government in March of 1995, but broke down after three months. The organization signed a state-level ceasefire with the government in the Karenni State capital of Loikaw in March of 2012, and a Union-level ceasefire in June of the same year.
