Mon Party to Register

Mon Party to Register

One of the party’s joint secretaries says the registration should be completed by mid-November.

The newly formed Mon Party held its first central executive committee meeting on November 2 in Mawlamyine last week to determine the organization’s future.

The primary topic of discussion was the party’s registration, said Joint Secretary 1 Nai Layi Tama, of the Party.

“Mon Party is going to register with the Union Election Commission (UEC) on November 15. We will step up the registration issue after we get permission to combine political parties,” he explained.

The Mon Party was officially introduced on September 21 and was formed by integrating the All Mon Region Democracy Party, Mon National Party, and Mon Representative Party.

After last week’s meeting, the central committee delegated the duty of drafting a party constitution to those leading the six participating regions. The current central executive committee (CEC) members and the draft party constitution will be used to register the Mon Party, with the idea that changes will be made to the constitution and the CEC structure re-visited after the party is registered with the UEC.

“It’s just temporary. After we get approval from the UEC, we will re-form the CEC and amend the constitution. After these amendments, we will send our party structure and the party constitution to the UEC again,” Joint Secretary 2 Nai San Tin told NMG.

Currently, the Mon Party has 140 central committee members, including 120 from political parties and 20 from Mon civil society. It also has 59 CEC members, 6 secretaries and 4 chairpersons.

The Mon Party continues to try to persuade other Mon political forces to join the newly established party, with the aim of competing in the 2020 elections.
