The Mon Party, a newly merged party of two Mon parties and political forces, will strive to obtain official registration faster.

“After holding a meeting on November 3, we will try to register by the end of 2018 or in early 2019. The Mon people should not doubt us. There is only one Mon party,” said Nai San Tin, joint secretary (2) of the Mon Party.

The party’s central executive committee will meet on November 3 to discuss party registration issues, review the party constitution and form working committees, he explained.

“Although the merger has been carried out at the upper level, the township and villages have not merged yet at the lower level. The lower level merger committee will be established to merge at the lower level. Financial committees and other committees will also be established. These [committees] will be established during the meeting in accordance with consent from everyone,” Nai San Tin continued.

The merger comprises the two Mon political parties, the Mon National Representative Party Organizing Committee, and Mon social organizations.

Nai Auk Sar from the Central Committee said the two Mon political parties have taken the chairman and secretary positions so the rest of the positions should be equally distributed to the Mon National Representative Party Organizing Committee and the Mon social organizations.

“Respective sectors must be involved in the drafting of the new political party’s constitution. The constitution, which has been drafted by Mon people, needs to be considered as well as the existing constitution of the two parties. A single political party cannot adopt it alone. If it adopts the constitution after seeking the desires of the Mon people and Mon organization, it will become a party that represents the entire [Mon] people. This is important,” he said.

The Mon Party’s central committee has been established with 50 representatives each from the two Mon political parties, 20 representatives from the Mon National Representative Party Organizing Committee, and 20 representatives of Mon social organizations.

A ceremony marking the merger of the All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMRDP), the Mon National Party (MNP), and the Mon National Representative Party Organizing Committee and introduction of the Mon Party was held at Royal Hinthar Hotel in Mawlamyaing on September 21.
