Fourteen inmates caught after escaping from Hpa-an prison

Fourteen out of 41 escaped inmates have been caught after they broke out of Taung Kalay Prison in Hpa-an Township, Karen (Kayin) State, an official from the State Police Force said to KIC News last night (September 16).

“We caught 14 inmates up to this evening (September 16). They were caught in different areas so there is a time difference. We’ve already got the vehicle back. We are still trying to capture [the escaped inmates],” he said to KIC News.

The government announced that the inmates, who were cleaning at the southern plantation in front of Wi Wai Kar Yi religious hall in Taung Kalay Prison, hijacked a garbage truck and drove it out of the prison at 8:40 am yesterday.

The escaped inmates consist of 29 convicts and 12 prisoners under trial. The hijacked truck was found on Sal Myaung Tar Baw Road in the area between Ywar Thar Aye and Tha Pu Hto villages under Hlaingbwe Township and the authorities are pursuing the escaped inmates.
