Around 500 acres of monsoon paddy fields in Chaungzon Township, Mon State have been damaged by flood, which was caused by rising tide on August 12, and snail infestation.

“The paddy fields have been damaged by flood. While the plants were weak, they become damaged after being eaten by snails,” said U Kyaw Ngwe, administrator of Ma Yan Village.

The township has over 60,000 acres of paddy fields. Statistics from the Township Land Records Department show that 489 acres of paddy fields have been damaged by flood in the township – 44 acres in Kawt Mu Pun Village Group, 40 acres in Kha Yaik Thit Village Group, 204 acres in Ma Yan Village Group, and 201 acres in Hin Thar Kyun Village Group.

U Win Naing, head of Chaungzon Township Agriculture Department, advised the farmers to adopt direct seeding when planting monsoon paddy in order to have better resistance against climate change and snail infestation and claimed that nearly all the farmers who adopted direct seeding have achieved success in planting monsoon paddy this year.
