Amending the 2008 Constitution and moving forward with the peace process in Myanmar will be the main challenges the National League for Democracy (NLD) faces after forming the new government, said political analyst Dr. Yan Myo Thein who spoke recently at the Intellectual Talk on 2015 Election in Yangon.
“In the previous Parliament, the ruling government did as they wanted and delayed amending the constitution. We haven’t found any detailed preparations. Amending it is an inevitable issue that needs to be carried out in 2016,” he said.
Another political analyst Daw Khin Ma Ma Myo said: “It’s not possible to become a democratic federal union by only repairing the roof. We need to completely amend the constitution to allow for another Panglong conference.” Negotiations with the ethnic armed groups won’t lead to lasting peace until after this happens, she said.
