Seven Burmese migrant workers were killed in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand when the Toyota Hilux pickup they were in was hit by a train during heavy rain at 5pm on 24 March.
A report from the local authority to the district level authority said that the accident happened on the level crossing behind Saraphi Hospital in Saraphi District, Chiang Mai.
There had been heavy rain, hailstones and strong wind since about 3pm that day. According to the police report because of the heavy rain the driver could not see the light that indicated a train was approaching and he continued onto the level crossing.
Seven people died on the spot, two women and five men aged between 25 and 50 years old. According to the police report four were named as Sai Tun, Sai Jayel, Sai Long from Phan town and Sai Won from Wain Han town, while the names of the other three who died are at present unknown.
According to the police report the driver, Sai Tun was seriously injured and sent to Saraphi Hospital before later being moved to Suan Dok Hospital.
All news agencies and radio stations broadcast warnings that heavy rain, hail and strong winds could affect the whole of Thailand until 27 March.
