Led by Burma News International (BNI) and Kayah State-based Kantarawaddy Times, the three-day conference aims to raise the profile of ethnic media, according to BNI’s director Nai Kasauh Mon.

Nai Kasauh Mon said ethnic media was vital in “providing truthful information to the public”.

Under the theme of “promoting ethnic media during the political transition of Myanmar”, the event has brought together around 300 people including Minister of Information U Pe Myint, Kayah State Chief Minister L Phaung Sho, Myanmar Press Council officials, journalists and representatives of ethnic media organizations.

Minister of Information U Pe Myint used his opening speech to discuss the “transition era” of Myanmar.

“National reconciliation is crucial for the democratic transition of our country. So, it’s very important to have patience and mutual understanding between each other,” U Pe Myint said.

He added that his ministry will assist the development of ethnic media.

Chief editor of the Kantarawaddy Times Ko Thar Nge said the role and importance of ethnic media outlets “can’t be neglected” during this transitional time.

Previous Ethnic Media Conferences have been held in Mawlamyine, Taunggyi, Hakha, and Mrauk U.
