Karen State Chief Minister Warns Against Corruption

Decisive actions will be taken against politicians that are involved in corruption said Karen State Chief Minister Nan Khin Htwe Myint to civil servants during a recent meeting held at Zwekabin Hall in Hpa-an. We need a corruption-free government and the state government can’t just do what it wants, she said, warning that an inspection will be made every six months to ensure progress is being made. If anything is wrong it will be changed.

“Our leader told us to avoid corruption. She will not stand for us if (it happens),” Nan Khin Htwe Myint said.

Over 300 state-level civil servants, district, township and ward administrators attended the meeting. The chief minister told them they can report to the National League for Democracy’s (NLD) headquarters if unsatisfied with any remarks and activities carried out by NLD MPs.

Hpa-an Township Police Superintendent U Myint Aye, who attended the meeting, told KIC News he was happy with what Nan Khin Htwe Myint said.

“It’s very good that the chief minister talked about taking action against corrupt government members. We, the civil servants, are ready to follow (the instruction). Also, the public needs to be informed. Bribery happens because there is someone who pays it and someone who takes it. The person paying the bribe needs to know not to pay it unnecessarily,” Myint Aye said.

Nan Khin Htwe Myint’s State is a Hluttaw MP from Hpa-an Constituency 1. She was appointed as the Karen State Chief Minister by President U Htin Kyaw on March 30. This was her first meeting with civil servants as the chief minister.
