Of the Chin State students who sat this year's matriculation exams 17.84 percent passed, more than double last year's pass rate of 8.07 percent.
In total, 9,639 students from Chin State took the matriculation exams and 1,720 passed. Of those, one student obtained a distinction in six subjects, one obtained five distinctions, five students obtained four distinctions, 15 students got a distinction in three subjects, 43 students got two distinctions and 233 students got a distinction in one subject.
Chin state Social Minister Dr. Ba Maung said: "There is more competition between schools in Chin State to offer a quality education. That is why the results are good and a higher percentage [of students] passed this year. We need to open more schools (day schools and boarding schools) so that there is more competition."
The township with the highest pass rate was Hakha Township, where 25.74 percent of students taking the matriculation exams passed. The lowest scoring township was Paletwa where 7.37 percent of students passed. Both the student who obtained a distinction in six subjects and the student who obtained a distinction in five subjects came from Falam Township.
