Oil and Gas Prospecting Starts Offshore from Arakan State

10 February 2015 – Prospecting for natural gas and crude oil offshore from Arakan State started on 7th February in a venture called the Aung Pyi Hein Testing Project Narinjara News has learnt.

The project is a joint cooperation between Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) and Chinnery Assets Limited and is taking place in sector AD-1.

The project will use the Hai Yang Shi You 981 platform owned by Chinnery Assets Limited.

This is the first test project to try and extract oil and gas from the deep sea off the coast of Arakan State.

The prospecting is taking place in 1,731 meters of seawater and the reserves are a further 3,000 meters underground. They are trapped in Pliocene and Miocene geological layers according to government newspapers.

Energy Minister U Zay Yar Aung and Arakan State Prime Minister U Maung Maung Ohn attended the project’s opening ceremony on 7th February.
