Dispute at India-Myanmar Border Gate Triggers Arson Attempt at Mizoram Trade Post

A dispute over cargo loading priorities at a border crossing between India’s Mizoram State and Myanmar’s Rakhine State escalated into a physical altercation and an arson attempt at a local inspection post on Sept. 14, according to residents and local media reports.

The incident occurred in Khaikhy Village, in Mizoram's Siaha District, involving Rakhine traders, boat operators, and members of the Mara Youth Association—known locally as Mara Thyutlia Py (MTP)—which manages the checkpoint.

Tensions flared after Rakhine boatmen alleged they were bypassed in the queue to load goods, leading to a heated argument and a physical scuffle.

MTP personnel on duty subsequently evacuated the post, after which angry traders burned the facility.

While the blaze was extinguished before destroying the building, entry logbooks, financial ledgers, and approximately 10,000 Indian rupees went missing.

Indian paramilitary personnel from the Assam Rifles and youth from neighboring Lopu village arrived to secure the area, prompting the traders to withdraw across the border into Myanmar.

A source close to the traders said the dispute was a minor altercation that has since been resolved through local mediation.

However, community members in Siaha warned that unresolved friction could endanger the trade corridor, which serves as a vital supply route for civilian populations in western Myanmar.

During the monsoon season, motorboats navigating the Kaladan River carry food and essential commodities into Rakhine State, transporting a volume equivalent to roughly 100 cargo trucks daily.

Following the incident, MTP Headquarters held an emergency meeting and issued a four-point statement.

The organization announced a formal field investigation, instructed local village councils to refrain from unauthorized media statements, and urged all parties to avoid spreading misinformation that could disrupt trade operations.
