According to records from the Burmese Women’s Union (BWU), 44 women including 8 girls under 18 were killed in junta attacks across Myanmar in April alone.
Between April 1 and 30, 44 women were killed and 57 others injured across the country, the BWU reported.
The dead included eight minors and one pregnant woman, while a disabled woman was among those injured.
Of the deaths, 36 resulted from airstrikes, four from arbitrary killings, two from artillery strikes, and two from gunfire.
Injuries included 45 women and girls from junta air assaults, 6 from artillery strikes, 5 from landmine explosions, and one woman suffered gunshot wounds.
Mandalay Region recorded the highest number of women deaths from junta attacks in a month with 11, followed by Sagaing Region with 8, Karen State with 6, Bago Region and Arakan (Rakhine) State with 4 each, Kachin and Chin states with 3 each, Magway Region and Karenni State with 2 each, and Tanintharyi Region with 1.
These figures are compiled from reliable media monitoring and ground data collection. However, the actual numbers are likely higher due to limited access to information from affected areas, according to the BWU.
The BWU said the junta continues to commit a wide range of human rights violations, including war crimes and crimes against humanity, and that women are being killed in incidents linked to various forms of abuses, including conflict-related sexual violence.
