CPU/CPA braces for imminent junta offensive in southern Chin State

As the junta prepares an offensive in southern Chin State, the Chin People’s Union/Chin People’s Army (CPU/CPA) is making plans to counter it, the group’s spokesperson said.

During a special online fundraising event for the Chin Brotherhood (CB) Alliance held on May 2, CPU/CPA secretary and spokesperson Salai Yaw Man said this.

“The junta has regained control of Falam Town in northern Chin State, and it is likely to extend its operations into southern Chin State as well. The formation of the CPU/CPA is an arrangement made in anticipation of such threats. We’ve prepared in advance what needed to be prepared. It is difficult to predict exactly what will happen in the immediate future, but over the next three to four months, things will become clearer. By then, we’ll be able to see whether our preparations have been successful or whether there are still weaknesses,” he told Khonumthung News.

The junta is stockpiling weapons and reinforcing its manpower for the offensive. However, its advance into southern Chin State is unlikely to be rapid, as resistance strongholds remain around Yaw Township and the Ponnyar Mountains in neighboring Sagaing Region, nevertheless, the CPU/CPA has already begun making necessary preparations, Salai Yaw Man said.

If southern Chin State can successfully withstand and repel the junta’s impending offensive, its liberation could shift from temporary to long-term, and the subsequent political landscape could change, he added.

Compared to the situation when the CB Alliance captured Mindat Town in Chin State in December 2024, the CPU/CPA has now formed a much more formidable coalition and is connected to stronger allies and partners.

“The CPU/CPA is preparing to strengthen our organizational capacity and our ties with our alliances. If we can withstand the coming crisis, we will be able to secure some gains for ourselves. The outcome of the impending fight will affect not only our existence, but also the future of the revolution. Therefore, we must strive and struggle with all our might. So far, we are confident in our preparations,” Salai Yaw Man said.

After capturing Falam, the junta deployed around 200 troops to Kangyi Village, a strategic point linking Magway Region with Chin and Arakan (Rakhine) states, to cut off logistical routes and prepare for an offensive into southern Chin State.

Furthermore, the junta is replenishing ammunition and supplies to its positions in several villages along the Chin-Magway border, including Kyaukhtu-based Artillery Battalion 368, through airlifts.

In addition, the junta has been airlifting ammunition and other supplies to Artillery Battalion 368 based in Kyaukhtu Town and its positions in several villages along the Chin-Magway border.

The forested areas between southern Chin State and Yaw Township, as well as towns such as Kyindwe (Kyatwee), Kyaukhtu, Gangaw, and Tilin, have also seen an increase in junta airstrikes in recent days. Recently, an airstrike in Kyindwe reportedly killed 11 people.

The CPU/CPA has urged residents of southern Chin State to build bomb shelters in advance and remain vigilant against airstrikes.
