Explosions kill 3 civilians, injure 6 in Rakhine within 2 months

Maung Sar Ga — The landmine and ordnance explosions In Rakhine State have killed three men and injured six including a woman during  January and February this year.

According to a list compiled by Narinjara News, two men were killed and five people, including a woman, injured In February.

Similarly, in January, one boy was killed and one man was injured.

The February victims are identified as U Adul Lameen (35) hailing  from Saya (Muslim) village under  Mrauk-U township and U Mar Mar Yena (alias Mar Airnet, 27) from Tan Saik (Muslim) village.

They were killed on 14 February as they were collecting firewood from the eastern part of Phap Pyo Rakhine village. An unexploded ordnance was found and it exploded when they tried to cut it with a knife.

The January victim was eight-year-old Maung Min Htet from Aung village (Sisaing Kone) under Ann township.  The child was killed by an ordinance after he went to pick up bananas  at 4:30 pm on 19 January.

Six of the injured victims hail from Maungdaw township, the western border of Rakhine State, Thandwe locality as well as Ann township, where the western military command is located.

Landmines and other unexploded ordnance are commonly found in and around these areas. Many cties, towns and villages where gun fighting took place still consist of such dangerous objects. Sometimes, those are found in public places like schools and religious buildings.

The civilians should always use public roads and in need they should talk to  local residents to confirm if the roads are safe, observed a local source.

He also added that any suspicious objects, if observed by anybody, should stay away and also inform the concerned authorities immediately. For any reasons, they should not pick up those objects or try to detonate, he asserted.
