Young man steps on a landmine in Thandwe, loses one leg

Khaing Lu Hla (Roma Mray) — A young man in Thandwe township of Rakhine State stepped on a landmine and he lost one leg after an explosion at around 4 pm on 16 February.

The victim is  identified as Ko Soe Lwin alias  Ko Ko (27) hailing from Kyaukkalap village under  Thandwe township, said an ABN news.

Ko Soe Lwin was taking care of a pepper plantation when he accidently stepped on a landmine, said a local villager.

The mine was a remnant left by the military personnel during the war. It seriously injured his right leg below the ankle. Moreover, his left leg was also sustained by shrapnel.

Ko Soe Lwin is currently receiving emergency medical treatment at a clinic. ‎

Earlier,  on 14 February two Muslim men were killed when they tried to cut an unexploded ordnance near Hpa Pyu village under  Minbya township and it exploded. ‎

Similarly, on 9 February a land mine exploded in Maal Chaung village under Ann township injuring a couple. ‎‎

The local residents of Rakhine State have been facing a regular loss of limbs and  lives due to abandoned landmines and explosive remnants of war. ‎

The activities demand that global  organizations relating  to mine injuries should  cooperate with the AA officials to remove all landmines planted by the junta forces, during the war in Arakan localities.
