Reports from Narinjara News indicate that, over the course of nine months from January to September, 17 individuals have lost their lives and 72 others have sustained injuries due to explosions caused by landmines and remnants of warfare in Arakan State.

The summary of incidents is detailed as follows: In January, there were two fatalities and two injuries; in February, there were eight fatalities and 19 injuries; in March, one fatality and 20 injuries occurred; in April, two fatalities and 12 injuries were reported; in May, there were two fatalities and 10 injuries; in June, one fatality and three injuries were noted; in July, there was one injury (with no fatalities); in August, there was one fatality and four injuries; and finally, in September, one injury was reported (with no fatalities).

Those affected by these tragedies comprise children, adolescents, women, and older adults. The events occurred in different townships throughout Rakhine State, including Maungdaw, Gwa, Mrauk-U, Taungup, Ann, Pauktaw, Minbya, Kyauktaw, Thandwe, Myebon, and Kyaukphyu.

Although the fatalities and injuries have declined from June to September, there remain worries about the widespread presence of landmines in the area. Civil society organizations believe that the decrease is due to mine awareness initiatives and mine clearance activities carried out by the Arakan Army (AA).

U Zaw Zaw Htun from the Community Resilience Development Team recognized the reduction but emphasized the obstacles in acquiring precise information because of communication issues. He stressed that although there have been advancements, there are probably undisclosed events taking place.

Due to ongoing concerns about mines, local residents are hindered from engaging in farming activities. The AA, which governs 15 townships in Rakhine State, including Paletwa Township, is actively participating in efforts to clear landmines.
