Junta Airstrike Hits Church in Western Demoso

Demoso Township, Karenni State — A Christian church in Tanan Ukwaing Village, located in western Demoso Township, was hit by a Myanmar junta airstrike on September 17, according to Brigadier General Boe Naing, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Karenni Army (KA).

“At around 10 a.m. yesterday, a bomb was dropped on the Catholic church in Tanan Ukwaing, west of Demoso. There were no clashes in the area, so this was a deliberate attack on a civilian location,” said Brig-Gen. Boe Naing.

The church was damaged in the strike, but no civilian casualties were reported. Locals confirmed that the area had not seen any fighting at the time of the attack.

Since August, junta forces have launched large-scale offensives in Demoso Township and claimed to have regained control of most parts of the town. As they continue advancing into populated areas, clashes with resistance forces have intensified.

This month alone, the junta has carried out two airstrikes in non-conflict zones of Demoso Township. On September 1, an airstrike on a displacement camp injured two civilians.

According to the Progressive Karenni People’s Force (PKPF) statement on September 1, at least 58 religious buildings in Karenni and Kayan region have been destroyed since the military coup of February 2021 through August 2025.
