On the morning of 2 September, the Myanmar junta carried out three airstrikes on La Myan village and nearby areas in Waingmaw Township, Kachin State, according to local residents.
The attacks occurred at 9:53 am, 10:30 am, and 10:58 am. Residents reported hearing the aircraft overhead but were unable to identify the type of plane due to overcast skies. Casualties and the extent of the damage remain unclear.
“It’s been raining continuously. We’re praying it keeps raining so the planes can’t fly,” a villager told Mizzima at around 4 pm.
Fighting between the junta and Kachin Independence Army (KIA) joint forces has been ongoing in La Myan, forcing residents from La Myan, Mot Kyeik, and War Shaung villages to flee. Those still in the area remain on high alert amid fears of more airstrikes.
Just days earlier, on 31 August, the junta bombed Nam Wha village, killing a seven-year-old girl, Shal Swal Ma Khaung Naw, and injuring four displaced civilians. Three of the injured suffered only minor wounds, residents said.
Hostilities in Waingmaw Township escalated in late August after the junta launched an offensive on La Myan, a village under KIA joint control.
