The National Unity Government (NUG) has formally welcomed the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant against Myanmar military leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, issued in connection with crimes against the Rohingya and other minorities.
In a statement released on 6 July, the NUG expressed its support for the ICC’s move and praised the unanimous adoption of a report on Myanmar’s human rights situation by the United Nations Human Rights Council. The resolution, which passed without a vote, highlights ongoing abuses against the Rohingya and other ethnic communities.
The NUG also called on Myanmar to participate in the High-Level Conference on the Situation of the Rohingya and Other Minorities, scheduled for September 2025, and pledged to dismantle discriminatory laws and grant citizenship to the Rohingya population.
In addition, the statement urged both the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) to expand their probes into alleged war crimes and human rights violations committed by the military regime.
The NUG condemned the military’s nationwide restrictions on humanitarian access, as well as its reported targeting of aid workers through arrests, detentions, killings, and the seizure of relief assets.
Mizzima has reached out to the NUG for further comment but has not yet received a response.
Earlier, on 10 June, U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar Jonathan Shrier stressed the importance of inclusive engagement – especially with the Arakan Army (AA), which now controls most of Rakhine State – in efforts to repatriate Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh.
