Junta Boosts Security in Three Arakan State Towns Still Not Taken by AA, Prohibits Fishing in Manaung Township

Residents indicate that fishing has been prohibited in Manaung Township as the military regime strengthens security in the last three towns of Arakan State not yet taken by the Arakan Army (AA).

A male inhabitant of Manaung informed Narinjara News that nearly 75 percent of the community in the junta-governed township is experiencing significant livelihood challenges following the junta's enforcement of a strict fishing ban in February.

"Beginning this month, we are entirely prohibited from fishing." Initially, we could only catch fish with a letter of endorsement from the village head, but now that is also prohibited. In Manaung, our primary source of income is fishing, and there are limited alternative job options. The villagers are facing greater difficulties than before,” he stated.

Another male resident of Manaung revealed to Narinjara News that because of the financial crisis, escalating commodity prices, and surging medicine expenses, individuals are struggling with their health, as they can no longer afford medication.

"Without any income, we are particularly facing challenges regarding their health. We cannot pay for medicine, and it costs a lot. We are unable to access hospitals or clinics, which means we are enduring hardship without any conflict," he stated.

In the town, trade with Yangon is permitted solely for the military and the crony community, causing prices to escalate daily.

"The products arriving from Yangon are very costly. Only those who can afford it or have connections to the military sell them, charging three to four times the initial price," a local stated.

Residents are concerned that 75 percent of Manaung Island's population lacks income, hindering their ability to support themselves. Simultaneously, the junta is attempting to convince residents, via village leaders, to partake in people's military training.

In Arakan State, the AA still has three towns to take: Sittwe, Kyaukphyu, and Manaung. Manaung Town, having never experienced conflict, is completely under the control of the junta, supported by both the navy and the military.
