The National Unity Government (NUG) announced, on 14 August 2024, that it has established nearly 6,000 interim community-based schools in liberated and resistance-controlled areas since the February 2021 coup.
In response to the educational disruptions caused by the junta's coup, the NUG has set up both traditional and online schools to ensure that students who lost access to formal education can continue their studies.
NUG community-based schools are currently educating over 750,000 students and employ more than 60,000 teaching staff, according to the NUG Ministry of Education.
The NUG is also facilitating the university admission process for students who have successfully completed the Basic Education Completion Assessment (BECA) and want to go on to enroll in universities established by the Ministry of Education.
The NUG is also collaborating with international organisations and local entities such as the Education Council of the Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC) and the Ta'ang Education Academy (TEA) to provide university-level education.
For students who want to continue into higher education the NUG has established 201 interim educational facilities offering university education. Currently, there are over 100,000 students enrolled at those facilities.
In the three years since the coup, between 8 and 11 million students in Myanmar have been deprived of educational opportunities, according to a February 2024 report by the Institute for Strategy and Policy - Myanmar (ISP-Myanmar).
