NUG representative to India fired for sexual harassment

Salai Isaac Khen (a.k.a Salai Isaac Khin) was removed from his position as a National Unity Government (NUG) diplomatic representative on 1 August 2024, after being found guilty of sexual harassment.

The NUG’s Protection from Sexual Harassment, Exploitation, and Abuses (PSHEA) Policy Central Committee announced on 3 August that it had removed Salai Isaac Khen from his post, following an exhaustive review of documents, testimonies, and eyewitness accounts relating to his behaviour.

It found that Salai Isaac Khen had repeatedly harassed an ethnic Chin female employee who worked for ten months as a secretary at the NUG's Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Indian office.

Following her complaint Salai Isaac Khen was suspended from his position on 25 June before being removed on 1 August, after the Policy Central Committee had carried out its investigations.

The Policy Central Committee said Salai Isaac Khen had greatly upset his victim and sexually harassed her with his obviously unwelcome and disturbing behaviour.

In its statement the Committee condemned Salai Isaac Khen and said that it was reprehensible and irresponsible that someone representing the NUG, one of the groups leading the anti-junta revolution in Myanmar, had behaved in such a way whilst abroad.

The Committee emphasised that Salai Isaac Khen had a duty to protect his colleagues within the department, but that he had instead chosen to exploit his victim. It said such actions were utterly unacceptable and necessitated a robust response.

Salai Isaac Khen previously served as the Minister of Municipalities, Electricity, and Industry in the Chin State Cabinet from 2016 to May 2018, during the tenure of the National League for Democracy (NLD)-led civilian government.

After the 2021 coup, Salai Isaac Khen joined the NUG and became actively involved in the revolutionary struggle. He was later appointed the NUG representative the NUG Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Indian office.
