The Thai government committee overseeing the Thailand-Myanmar border situation In its first ever meeting on April 23, outlined the framework for managing refugees and security measures.
Under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, the meeting took place prior to his fact-finding visit in the afternoon to Tak's Mae Sot district, the border town opposite the Myawaddy district in Myanmar, where bitter clashes took place last weekend.
Parnpree's delegation included Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
About 3,000 Myawaddy residents fled from the war-zone and took refuge in Mae Sot District.
The inaugural meeting of the committee, established by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on April 11, addressed various aspects of the Myanmar conflict that could affect Thailand, with a primary focus on readiness for potential refugee influx and security precautions.
Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that participants in the meeting reached consensus on three fundamental principles: protecting the country's sovereignty, not allowing Thailand to be used to conduct activities against Myanmar's government (the coup regime), and upholding humanitarian principles without discrimination.
He added that the National Security Council (NSC) has been assigned to closely monitor the Myanmar situation, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with coordinating efforts with the global community and international organizations.
Nikorndej emphasized the volatile nature of the Myanmar situation, highlighting the need for hourly assessments. He underscored that Deputy Prime Minister Parnpree's visit is anticipated to offer a clearer understanding, particularly regarding the ongoing fighting, ensuring security for Thai nationals, and delivering humanitarian aid to affected individuals.
Nikorndej also affirmed that the Thai government is prepared to offer assistance to individuals seeking refuge and is poised to facilitate peace talks if necessary.
In response to inquiries regarding the potential establishment of any group involved in the conflict deploying forces on Thai soil, he categorically stated that such a scenario would never be allowed.
