Conscription Law Triggers Mass Resignation of Village Administrators in Thandwe

All 72 village-tract administrators in Thandwe Township have reportedly submitted their resignation letters to the District General Administration Office on March 18, as confirmed by a source familiar with the matter.

" All 72 village-tract administrators in Thandwe Township have tendered their resignations, with a single representative submitting them on behalf of the group”, the source said.

Under pressure from the Junta, the village-tract administrators attempted to conduct field recruitment for military personnel, but encountered significant hostility from local villagers, resulting in their decision to submit resignations. "The administrators faced difficulties when conducting recruitment for military service, which is why they decided to submit their resignations”, the source added.

Following the submission of their resignations, the village-tract administrators are apprehensive about potential arrests by the Junta. The administrators are concerned about the possibility of being arrested by the Junta”, he told Narinjara.

The Committee of Summoning People's Military Servants was formed on March 6 in Thandwe Township, initiating a process where two young men from every village-tract would be selected via lottery and mandated to undergo military training.

Some village administrators have informed Narinjara that they are pressured by the Junta to recruit new conscripts every four months, placing them in a difficult predicament between the directives of the Junta, and the concerns of the villagers.
