More than a hundred Rohingya individuals were arrested in a rubber plantation located in Wagaru village in Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State.

On January 24th at 8:00 AM, authorities conducted a search near Setse village in Thanbyuzayat based on reports of a substantial number of Rohingyas sightings, uncovering 117 individuals hiding in Wagaru. The detained Rohingyas comprised 59 males and 58 females including 7 girls.

Reportedly, the detained Rohingyas departed from Rakhine State in association with human smuggling agents, with a plan to travel through Mon State to reach Thailand, and eventually reach their final destination in Malaysia.

Presently the detained Rohingyas are held in the township's gymnasium and are undergoing interrogation. Incidents of detentions have occurred previously involving Rohingyas entering through the waterway in Thanbyuzayat, locals said.

Based on collected data, over 500 undocumented Rohingyas were apprehended in Thanbyuzayat, Mudon, and Mawlamyine townships in Mon State in the year 2023 alone.

Since the Military Council orchestrated the coup, the arrest of undocumented Rohingyas has surged nationwide, including in Mon State. Tragically some Rohingyas seeking improved lives in foreign countries have been killed on the way where the perpetrators remain unidentified.
