Worries Grow Among Hpruso Township IDPs About Decreased Food Supply

At the Sothel IDP camp in Hpruso township, Kayah (Karenni) state, concerns have arisen among the internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to a diminished food supply for this year.

"People are facing difficulties in finding enough food. At the moment, they are managing somehow. However, there are concerns about food availability in the future," mentioned a volunteer from the Sothel IDP camp.

The Sothel IDP camp is currently providing shelter to a total of 900 individuals from six villages.

Despite the dangers of conflict, landmines, artillery shells, and the constant risk of military arrest or harm, some IDPs choose to return home and work in agriculture. However, they continue to face food shortages.

Reportedly, some of the IDPs who escaped the war by coming to Hpruso township are unable to farm, resulting in food shortages for certain households.

Hpruso township currently hosts 15 IDP camp sites, and a majority of these residents are expressing concern over the reduced availability of food for this year.

"A religious group dedicated to aiding those in genuine need has informed that individuals are welcome to approach them for help. While this assistance is now provided by a single organization, they have discontinued their monthly support. They have explicitly stated that if someone is without any means to access food, they are encouraged to reach out and request assistance," explained a woman assisting Hpruso IDPs.

In the past years, food donations from donors were a nearly monthly occurrence. However, this year, IDPs are experiencing difficulties because some food donations are now being provided only once every 4 to 6 months.

In recent times, IDP camps have been frequently encountering food shortages. The primary factors behind the donors' inability to provide assistance include military restrictions, rigorous inspections, and transportation difficulties.
