Mon State is cracking down on three bottled water brands after they failed to pass a water sample test four times in a row, according to state regulatory officials.

The three bottled water brands – Moe Myint Thar from Kyaikmaraw township, Win Latt from Chaungzone township and Cherry from Mawlamyine township – were slapped with a temporary ban after the manufacturers applied to renew their licenses.

“The three [bottled water] brands have not passed the water sample [test] for the fourth time. We conducted the inspections together with the township food and drug supervisory committees,” said U Soe Naing, director of the Mon State Food and Drug Administration.

The three companies cannot sell their water to the public until they pass the FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practice test. The GMP test for water includes making sure it does not contain microorganisms, chemicals or Coliform bacteria.

The Mon State FDA said it will conduct surprise checks on bottled water manufacturers, and will be looking at the machine maintenance, room layout and any weaknesses relating to bottled water production.

There are 59 FDA-certified purified water brands in Mon State, including those that are temporarily banned, according to statistics from state FDA officials.

The Mon State FDA was established in 2014, and started inspecting bottled water production in 2015. It inspected school food stalls and markets in 2016.
