Most of the complaint letters received by the Mon State Hluttaw (parliament) in its second term concern land disputes and projects said the General Issues (Complaints Appeals Submissions and Observations) Committee chairman U Aung Kyaw Thu.

He said: “Up until today we have received 25 complaint letters. We will give priority to issues that involve the public and management of natural resources. We will hand over the cases relating to personal affairs, cases that fall under the police’s jurisdiction and civil cases to the authorities.

The committee members have been conducting field investigations into complaints made about projects and will present their findings to the state government in the state parliament.

U Aung Kyaw Thu said that the committee had to prioritise looking into complaints about the cement factory in Kyaikmaraw Township and mining at Oke Ta Dar Village in Paung Township.

He also said that many of the public’s complaints about projects happened because those running the projects had failed to properly inform the public about what was happening.

The general issues Committee member U Zaw Zaw Htoo said: “We have set down policies on how to submit reports, what kind of issues can be reported on, and which issues we will take action on. The committee has been making field investigations.”

He added that many issues had arisen because there was a lack of transparency, responsibility and accountability among entrepreneurs.

The General issues Committee consists of 11 members who meet up every week.
