Political Conference in Karenni State

Karenni (Kayah) State needs a new transparent, accountable and responsible state government after the 2015 elections, said U Soe Soe from Hsadaw Township Kayah National Race Democracy Party.

He made the statement on the first day of a conference being held by political parties and representatives of the people at Kayt-Htoo-Boe Hall in Cho-Kel village in Loikaw Township from 11 to 13 May.

He said: “They [the state government] should be transparent in the cases of farmland protests. Also, in development projects [run by the government and other authorities] they do not pay every day on time [as they should].”

U Deniar, chairman of Kayah National Race Democracy Party said that it was important that they get a state government that really works for the people.

He said: “When they lead the people and work for them they need to listen to the people’s voices, satisfy their needs and defend them. These are the duties of a good government.”

Naw Luu D from the All Nationalities Democracy Party (Kayah State) said that the government should be transparent about mega projects, bridge building, road building and the construction sector.

She said: “Until they work within a genuinely democratic system we people will object to mega development projects and road and bridge constructions such as the Mawche-Taungngu Road.”

At the conference, township by township, representatives of the people reported hardships in their townships.

The conference organizers said that the objectives of the conference are to foster unity among the political parties, good governance of the state, cooperation of people in politics after they have become politically aware and an ability to implement the people’s desires by drawing up policies that the people find uplifting.

Over 300 people attended the conference, they include representatives from political parties based in Kayah State and people representing their townships.
Locally based political parties such as Kayan National Party, Kayah National Race Democracy Party, and All Nationalities Democracy Party (Kayah State) are alliance parties that will join together to compete in the forthcoming elections.
