Kya Khat Chaung High School in Kyain Seikgyi Township had the highest matriculation exam pass rate in Kayin (Karen) State – for the fifth year in a row, according to an official from the state’s education department.

This came as the 2016-2017 academic year matriculation exam results were released on June 17.

Education officer U Myint Soe said Kya Khat Chaung High School had the best pass rate in the state while Shwe Gun High School in Hlaingbwe Township was in second place.

U Myint Soe said there were significant improvements in Kayin State results this year.

“Last year, there were three schools where no students passed. This year, every school had someone that passed. [But] we’re not satisfied yet. We need to urge [all schools] to increase their pass rates,” he said.

U Myint Soe added that while there had been many new schools and school upgrades around the state, there was still a lack of teachers and sufficient teacher training remained an ongoing problem.

Headmistress of Kya Khat Chaung High School Daw Maw Maw Lwin told KIC News that the pass rate at her school was 74.73 percent.

“We had been training our students both day and night at the school. We aimed to achieve an 80 percent pass rate so we are happy that we continue to achieve success,” she said.

Out of the 706,088 students across Myanmar who took the matriculation exam in the 2016-2017 academic year, 242,736 students passed.

Mon State had the highest pass rate at 41.12 percent and Rakhine (Arakan) State ranked the lowest with 16.17 percent.

Among 16,010 students taking the exam in Kayin State, 4,718 students passed, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Education.
