10,000 Arakan farmers join anti-junta protests

Taungup: About 10,000 farmers in Arakan State, Burma on Saturday joined the protest against the Burmese military junta in Wra Ma Village, 30 miles north of Taungup in southern Arakan.

Farmers from several villages surrounding Wra Ma Village marched along the streets shouting anti-regime slogans, a woman in Taungup said.

Many monks in the area also took part in the demonstration and delivered speeches on the recent crackdown by the junta on the monks in Rangoon and Mandalay, an eyewitness said.

People in the demonstration were angry with the junta's action against the monks in Rangoon and shouted anti-government slogans, according to a local villager.

The authorities in Taungup sent a platoon of policemen to the village to crack down on the demonstration soon after they received the information.

However, there is no information yet about whether the authorities arrested the farmers who were involved in the protest yesterday.

Meanwhile, 2000 demonstrators, including 100 monks staged a demonstration yesterday in Arakan State's capital Akyab by marching along several streets.

Participants in the demonstration marched silently while monks recited Buddhist chants.

The demonstration started at 2 p.m. and ended peacefully at 4 p.m. without any intervention by military authorities.
