Thousands of monks in Rangoon protest march

A 70-year old monk led thousands of monks and people in a protest march around Rangoon city.

"About a thousand monks are walking downtown towards Sule Pagoda from where they will go to Botahtaung. The number of people are increasing," a monk in Rangoon told IMNA around 3 p.m. Thai standard time.

The demonstration started with about 60 monks at about 2 p.m. (Burmese standard time) in front of Gjei-ton-pagoda on the east of Shwedagon pagoda which they are trying to enter.

Though the authorities did not allow it and tried to stop the protesters, they did succeed and the number of people who joined the procession kept increasing.

The Rangoon authorities have stopped people from worshiping in Shwedagon pagoda.

A monk in Rangoon said there is a mass of people but he could not identify from which monasteries the monks came.  The monks are still going around the town from Shwedagon pagoda through Sule pagoda to Botahtaung.
