Biggest monasteries in Pegu barred food offerings

The two biggest monasteries in Pegu (Bago) Division, Burma have been barred from receiving food offerings from the town by local authorities, said an abbot in Pegu. The move follows monks in Mandalay division joining the protests over the fuel price hike.

Kyat Khat Wine and Tharthana Mern Daing monasteries were barred this morning.  Monks from other monasteries went around the town to get food offerings.

"I don't know much about it. But they barred it this morning, I don't know why," an abbot said.

Kyat Khat Wine monastery has about 1,200 monks while Tharthana Mern Daing has about 600 monks.

Recently the Burmese military junta authorities in Pegu requested these temple abbots to take responsibility if their monks joined the protest. But both abbots refused.

The monks from two monasteries support the movement for democracy and the going protests.
