'Open Heart' opens with 10,000 letters

Pro democracy Burmese activists launched their new campaign - 'Open Heart' today, urging the military junta to usher in political reforms by distributing 10,000 letters in Rangoon.

The month long 'Open Heart' campaign by 88 generation students calls on people to write about their feelings regarding their suffering under a brutal and oppressive military regime in a deteriorating economic situation even as they marked Burma's 59th Independence Day.

Mya Aye, an 88-generation student leader told Mizzima, "A total of 10,000 letters were distributed among our close political communities in Rangoon today. But we will send more letters country wide including Mandalay and other parts of Burma tomorrow."

The campaign is in a form of envelope with a message attached to the people of Burma and a letter addressing military supremo General Than Shwe undersigned by 88-generation students. The campaign will end on February 4.

"Every on can write any letter about their daily needs, problems, hardships, ...whatever they feel and put it in the envelop and can send it back through our campaigners or supporters or send it back directly to us", Mya Aye said.

The letters are going to be delivered through speed post or mail post and will be sent in every possible way to reach the General.

Burma gained independence from British colonial rule in 1948. However, national politician Amyoetheryei Win Naing based in Rangoon said, "The real meaning of independence is acceptance by the public ".

At present, we have lost all types of freedom including freedom of expression, writing or complaining. We still have not got genuine independence, he added.
