Mya Wun Yan — Representatives of the National League for Democracy (NLD) are observing Polling Station No 5 in Sao San Tun Ward in southern Shan State’s Taunggyi after receiving news that external ballots only arrived at 10:45 am, according to NLD candidates.

This polling station has been opened for the military personnel and family members of the nearby military regiments, including the Eastern Command. According to the polling station officer, 616 external ballots have arrived past deadline. The station has 2,994 eligible voters, and 416 people have given advanced votes.

“We saw yellow ballots tied together, as they were external ballots that arrived past the deadline. They have been put in a plastic bag. The polling station officer said they won’t be added to the list,” said Dr. Day Than Ngwe, a NLD candidate for Taunggyi Township.

“These ballots will be considered as invalid ballots as they have arrived past the deadline,” said U Tin Oo, chairman of Taunggyi District Commission who is inspecting the polling stations.

“We have been standing in line since 5 am. Men stand in one line and women stand in one line. Advanced votes have been given by those that are sick, the disabled and those travelling,” said a family member of military personnel.
