Htoe Myar — National League for Democracy (NLD) candidates are planning to clean up Karenni State with the launch of special trash collection program from Dec. 12 to 13.  The idea that falls in line with other cleanup programs currently underway by NLD party members in neighboring states came after party leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi suggested recently it would be a good idea.

“We will follow our leader’s words,” said Pe Du, the NLD’s winning Lower House candidate from Hpruso Township.

Suu Kyi didn’t formally request for Karenni NLD party members to take part in what has started to become  a nationwide effort, but their civic pride took hold them propelling them to also organize a similar event.

The idea of cleaning up trash is still a foreign concept to many of the state residents, so NLD party members plan to lead the activities by example.

“We haven’t thought about whether or not we will inform the City Development Committee yet because it might then involve some negotiation. (But) it would be better if the City Development Committee can join us,” Pe Du said.

State Parliament candidate U Baw Saw told BNI Election Newsroom that candidates from Demoso Township have also decided to get involved and are now in the process of determining exact dates for the trash collection.

U Phay Reh (also called U Myint Than Tun), a winning candidate for Loikaw Township’s Upper House, was also inspired to organize a likewise cleanup event without being nudged by NLD central committee party members.

“It was just an instruction to candidates to act as role models. We don’t think it’s the City Development Committee’s duty to do these tasks (collecting trash),” he said, adding it’s important to protect the environment.
