Htoe Myar — Some people in Hpruso town in Karenni State are confused about Sunday’s election and the voting procedure in general. Residents are easily swayed by rallies by popular candidates without knowing what they actually stand for. Or what candidates are running in their constituencies.

“Some say the NLD is good, and that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is good.. We don’t understand…Nobody has come to tell us about the voting process,”  said Daw Balhnar Dal Tar from Lawbudar Ward.

Others are just too busy just trying to put food on the table to worry about who to vote for.

“Some people from this village have interest in the election, but those that don’t understand will undoubtedly lack interest in it. Their priority is their job... They don’t spend time listening to the rallies,” said U Koo Reh, head of Law Jar Village.

U Joseph, a polling station officer from Moso Village, said he and his family will assist elders that are illiterate.

“We can only help them by issuing the ballots. Nobody can follow them inside the voting room,” he explained, adding everything will be finished in time for Sunday’s election according to regulations.

U Phillip, chairman for Lawbudar Ward and Village Election Commission, said there may be some difficulties on Election Day as elders and others still don’t understand the voting process.

“It will be difficult for the disabled and the elders because they can’t vote on their own. It’s difficult for us to help us. But, we plan to have the observers, or their family members helping them cast their ballots.”

Daw Stellar, a teacher from Moso Village, said their school has been closed for several days to prepare the polling station.
