San Maung Than — Candidates in Arakan State that contested Sittwe Township constituency during the recent election reported being satisfied with results, congratulating the victorious Arakan National Party (ANP).

Daw Hla Aye from the National Unity Party (NUP) that contested the Lower House in Sittwe Township was happy even though she wasn’t elected. It wasn’t a surprise, she said. From the start of campaigning, Daw Hla Aye was told that if she joined the ANP her ballot box would be filled with votes in favour. She’s glad everything went smoothly, apart from an isolated incident when a polling station officer restricted candidates from entering a station in Thinponetan Village; Constituency No 1.

U Thinkhar Kyaw with National League for Democracy (NLD) that contested a Lower House seat in Sittwe Township also didn’t expect to win but accepts losing.

“We’re thankful that we got this much votes. We knew that we wouldn’t win in Sittwe I ran because the NLD had to field candidates across the country,” he said.

Dr. Kyawt Thar Sein with Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) said she was satisfied but expressed frustration the public voted for the ANP without considering qualifications of her party’s candidates.

“The Arakan people have a deep-seated feeling (for their parties),” she said. Originally a native of Yangon, Kyawt Thar Sein said she moved to Arkan State to help after selling her house and land.
