San Maung Than — Many voters in Arakan State capital Sittwe have endorsed the Arakan National Party (ANP).

Residents from Kyaukthatlan Ward, Aung Mingalar Ward and Mizan Ward said they voted for the ANP.

“I voted for the ANP because I thought it was best for me to vote for the Arakan party as an Arakan national. I believe the party will be able to carry out development in Arakan State,” said U Kyaw Hlaing from Kyaungthatlan Ward with over 1,800 eligible voters.

U Than Shwe from the Aung Mingalar Ward also voted for the ANP. Aung Mingalar Ward has 967 eligible voters, including 26 ethnic Kameins, Hindus and Maramagyi.

“All three members of my family voted for the ANP. Our neighbors also voted for the ANP. We voted for the party because we wanted to have ethnic Arakan administer Arakan State,” said Daw Ni Ma Chay.

Candidates inspected the polling stations and found nothing afoul and everything in order.

“I have inspected over 7 polling stations. In one polling station, I saw polling station guards talking outside so I told the polling station officer to have them stay inside the polling station area,” said independent candidate U Aung Mya Kyaw who is running for State Parliament Constituency No 1.

There were initial fears from voters that they wouldn’t be able to cast their ballot as some polling stations had between 1,800 and 2,000 registered voters.
